If you're a US student dreaming of a master's, PhD, or postdoctoral experience Down Under, there's a scholarship program you need to have on your radar right now — and the clock is ticking.
The American Australian Association (AAA) is currently accepting applications for its 2026 US → Australia scholarship round, offering awards of up to USD $40,000 to support tuition and living expenses at accredited Australian institutions. Applications close 11:59pm ET on September 30, so if you're considering study in Australia for the next intake, now is the time to start pulling your application together.
Who Is the American Australian Association?
The AAA is a non-profit dedicated to strengthening the bilateral relationship between the United States and Australia through education, research, and creative exchange. Since its scholarship program began, the Association has awarded more than USD $19 million to over 1,150 scholars — including veterans, researchers, and artists — supporting work that advances the connection between the two countries.
Beyond the funding itself, recipients join a network of alumni, institutional partners, and public-minded leaders across both nations, which can be just as valuable as the award for students planning long-term careers with an international dimension.
Key Dates You Need to Know
The AAA runs one application window each year for US students wanting to study in Australia, and applications are now open:
USA → Australia: Applications open August 1 and close September 30. Award confirmations follow around December 1.
For US students, that means the window is open right now — but with a hard close at the end of September, there isn't a lot of runway left to gather transcripts, secure references, and put together a compelling application.
Three Scholarship Pathways
The AAA scholarship program is organized into three distinct funds, each with its own focus and eligibility criteria.
Graduate Education Fund Established in 2002, this is the largest and broadest of the three pathways, supporting Masters, PhD, and postdoctoral study and research. Priority fields include AI and Cyber; Biology, Medicine, and Health; Critical Minerals and Rare Earths; Defense and Defense Technology; Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics; and Space — reflecting areas of strategic importance to both countries.
Veterans' Fund Launched in 2017, this fund supports honorably discharged post-9/11 US and Australian veterans pursuing full-time undergraduate or graduate study in any discipline, helping veterans build new skills for prosperous post-military careers.
Arts Fund Formerly known as the Dame Joan Sutherland Fund, this pathway supports emerging and early-career artists across film, television, dance, music, visual arts, design, literature, and photography, ranging from short-form opportunities to formal institutional study.
What Selection Panels Look For
Regardless of pathway, applicants are evaluated on:
Academic excellence (or, for the Arts Fund, demonstrated artistic merit and potential)
Demonstrated leadership potential
A clear capacity to contribute to long-term bilateral engagement between Australia and the United States
Applications are reviewed by a series of selection panels following the closing date, with shortlisted candidates invited to interview ahead of final award decisions.
How to Apply
Student's first need a letter of offer from an Australian university before applying for the AAA scholarship.
